Given the success of the managed taxi ranks between 2002 and 2018, and with widespread recognition that the highly popular managed ranks offered outstanding benefits to the travelling public, it was inevitable that they again be up and running once they got the strong support of the State Government.

The Taxi Council introduced managed ranks on a trial basis in 2002 and they quickly grew from there, with more than 2 million customers assisted into taxis over that time until that fabulous service to the public ceased when funding stopped in 2018.

It is great news that they are back up and running and the public is loving them. The comments and commendations that we receive are most gratifying. We try to staff as many of the ranks at crucial times and this year managed ranks made a much appreciated surprise appearance at the AFL Games including the Gather Round, receiving comments like “where have you been?”, and “thank goodness you’re back”; The Concierges love helping you get into a taxi that will take you safely home.

THE BENEFITS

Safety is the most important feature of the Managed Rank program. The public, particularly women travelling alone at night, feel confident to be waiting in the presence of a Concierge and Security Officer. Managed Taxi Ranks have also become meeting places for young people who need to feel safe to gather to share a cab.

The benefits of the Managed Rank program include;

• Security in the knowledge that a taxi will be available.
• Security in the knowledge that there is CCTV at the managed rank and that when they get into a taxi, the taxi is also equipped with CCTV.
• Provision of a safe, well lit, monitored place to wait for a taxi after a night out in the city and a gathering spot for those who get separated from their friends.
• Passenger confidence that they will be put into a taxi which is fully licensed and with a driver who is accredited with the appropriate National Police and Working with Children clearances.

 Efficient movement of large numbers of people looking for a taxi. Taxi drivers will come to the rank for easy loading compared with picking up off the street.

• Multi-hiring can be arranged by the Concierge, allowing passengers going in the same direction to share a taxi at a reduced price.
• A uniformed security officer together with a Taxi Concierge provide a beneficial partnership for helping late night revellers to stay safe, discouraging unsociable behaviour and drink driving.
• The professional Concierges and Security Guards work closely with the South Australia Police and have excellent training and well documented operating procedures giving confidence to late night travellers.
